Soldiers of the Italian armed forces operate as part of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan to combat Taliban militants and al-Qaeda terrorists. 
Italian army has deployed some 411 soldiers from the 2nd Alpini Regiment.

Italy has deployed 3 AB 212 helicopters in Kabul, Afghanistan.
