The United States has signed a contract worth over $3.49 billion with the United Arab Emirate for the sale of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD). The THAAD missile interceptor is designed to destroy the incoming ballistic missiles at ranges of 200km and at altitudes up to 150km.
The UAE's THAAD missile interceptors will be linked with the United States Navy’s Aegis-class destroyers and cruisers for the early warning of ballistic missile launches.
In September 2008, UAE requested the United States government for the sale of 3 THAAD fire units with 147 interceptor missiles, 4 THAAD AN/TPY-2 ground-based radar (GBR), 6 fire control stations and 9 launchers. UAE has reduced its order to 96 interceptor missiles and 2 THAADAN/TPY-2 ground-based radar (GBR).
